ROYAL ATHENA PEDESTRIAN PLAZA
CLIENT: O’Neill Properties
TYPE: Recreation
LOCATION: Philadelphia, PA
STATUS: Completed Spring 2016
Located adjacent to the Schuylkill River, this pedestrian and bicyclist plaza embraces it’s once lost history. Once a thriving industrial site, the closure of the Pencoyd Bridge cut off all access from the thriving Manayunk Main Street. By re-opening the bridge, the projected created access for the new residents, but was lacking the public interest. By establishing the public plaza, we created a welcoming node for the community and in return a crucial connection from the Schuylkill River Trail to the Bala Cynwyd Trail. This project was the first of a multiple phase revitalization of the Pencoyd Riverfront. The area has continued to upgrade and expand by adding additional residences and a boutique hotel.
